Performance Task:
The impact of land use on the global water cycle

Here’s What We Did:
I printed the articles posted within the Defined STEM performance task, and separated students into small groups. Each group was given the same article to read and summarize. To practice ELA skills I had each student underline parts they felt were important, put a star by main ideas, and draw a question mark by something they did not understand. Students then shared their findings with the rest of the group with a two-minute summary. Using the language prompt in the performance task I had students write a technical report on their findings from the article. I supplied an outline with questions like, ‘how will this impact people?’ and ‘why should I care?’ Once complete, students shared with the class.

Why Defined STEM Was the Perfect Fit:
The task was extremely relevant and provided credible articles which saved students time on doing research. With lesson materials provided I am not reinventing the wheel creating new ones which gives me time to try new things and use new recourses, like Defined STEM. Students were able to put their writing skills to the test in a subject other than English. Their engagement in the lesson was much greater compared to doing a worksheet. They enjoyed taking on a new role and being part of a team to accomplish the task at hand.
