Literacy Task Zoos and Endangered Species

What we did:
I always start class by asking my students a relevant and relatable question. With this particular lesson I asked, “What does it take to live?” The lesson really kicked off when I asked why things die. It led to a conversation about how species become endangered and the role zoos play in keeping animals from becoming extinct. Using Defined STEM, students conducted research using the provided links and videos, acquired new vocabulary words, and posted what they learned on a class message board. They were able to collaborate with me and other students. They enjoyed not using paper and pencil and learned an important online etiquette lesson.

Why Defined STEM was the Perfect Fit:
As a tech-savvy teacher I choose to never use textbooks. Defined STEM expands my options for teaching and engaging students in a digital learning environment. I believe this particular lesson resonated with students because there were many resources to chose from and the videos were short and to the point. It is extremely convenient for teachers to access rubrics, examples, research, videos, and references all in one place.
