Teacher Case Study: Dani Hardman

5th grade teacher Dani Hardman used the Structural Engineer: Bridges performance task.

A Defined STEM Learning Experience From:

Dani Hardman

5th Grade Teacher

Countryside Elementary School (AZ)

Performance Task:

Bridge Project

Here’s What We Did:

My students researched the structures of bridges all around the United States and then placed them into categories. They had to research ten bridges of any era. Then, they categorized the bridges by what they were constructed of and places or weather erosions that might occur. The students wrote a research paper, drew a diagram, and constructed a bridge out of toothpicks.

The students learned a lot and their motivation was very high. The project gave them deeper understanding of the topics covered.

Why Defined STEM Was the Perfect Fit:

Defined STEM is very organized and planned out for a teacher. It’s nice that we can do the project in steps and build on what is learned.
